Sylvan Morris

Reggae sound engineer Sylvan Morris behind the board at Tuff Gong Studio.

Sylvan Morris was a recording engineer on countless classic reggae albums. He worked for Duke Reid, Coxone Dodd at Studio One and engineered most of the sound at Harry J’s studio in the 70’s. He’s done work for artists like Gregory Isaacs, Burning Spear, Augustus Pablo, Dennis Brown, Bunny Wailer, The Heptones, Big Youth, Ken Boothe, The Gladiators, Delroy Wilson and many many more. Perhaps his most famous job was in 1974 when he was the engineer on Bob Marley’s Natty Dread sessions (recorded at Harry J’s) and later working on the Rastaman Vibration album as well.

He’s pictured here in 2003 at the controls at Tuff Gong doing sound for an all-star session that included the legendary reggae musicians: Earl”Chinna”Smith, Glady Anderson, Steelie Johnson, Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, Bagga Walker, Jackie Jackson, Radcliffe”Dougie”Bryan, Style Scott, Sticky Thomson, Flabba Holt, Junior Byles, Kiddius-I, Chris Meridith, Keith Sterling, Robbie Lynn, Sangie Davis, Dean Fraser, Nambo Robinson, Squidly Cole and more. I will be posting more photos from these sessions later.
