Style Scott

Drummer Style Scott playing a session at Tuff Gong Studios, Kingston. (2004)

Sadly the reggae world has lost another great musician. Drummer Lincoln”Style”Scott was murdered in his home last week. I did not know him real well but I had hung out with him at several shows and at a few sessions in Kingston. Style was a friendly, funny guy and of course a great drummer who we will all surely miss. Below is an article from my good friend Howard Campbell of the Jamaica Observer.

(Also tragically there is another death to report, just in is news that the legendary singer John Holt has passed on after dealing with an illness in the UK, he was 69.)

LINCOLN ‘Style’ Scott, an original member of the influential Roots Radics Band, was killed at his Manchester home last Thursday evening.

The Corporate Communication Unit reports that the 58-year-old Scott was found dead by police at his home in Williamsfield district just after 10:00 pm.

The police were told that explosions were heard from Scott’s home at about 10:10 pm.

No arrests have been made in the case.

Born in Chapelton, Clarendon, Scott was a member of the Jamaica Military Band who also played the north coast hotel circuit before joining the ‘Radics’.

In 1979, the fledgling band also included bass player Errol ‘Flabba’ Holt, rhythm guitarist Eric ‘Bingy Bunny’ Lamont, lead guitarist Noel ‘Sowell’ Bailey, and keyboardist Wycliffe ‘Steely’ Johnson.

They were, arguably, the hottest reggae band of the late 1970s to the mid-1980s, playing on numerous hit songs by Barrington Levy, Looking my Love, Bunny Wailer’s, Rock ‘N’ Groove and Gregory Isaacs,  Night Nurse.

Along with the Roots Radics, Scott recorded and toured with Isaacs, Wailer and roots group Israel Vibration. He is the fourth member of the band to die; Lamont, Johnson and Bailey preceded him.

In recent years, Scott toured Europe frequently as leader of the Dub Syndicate Band, which he coordinated with British reggae historian/producer Adrian Sherwood.
