Fishermen, Old Harbor Bay

A couple of fishermen at Old Harbor Bay outside of Kingston. (1994)

I love fish, I love to fish, eat fish and I have also photographed a lot fishermen in Jamaica. Years ago I was helping out a friend of mine who was doing various environmental surveys around the island. We would go around and talk to  fishermen and seeing if they had noticed any changes in the fish they are catching and reminding them about the environmental hazards of fishing with poison or dynamite, both of which have decimated many of Jamaica’s coral reefs.

It was interesting getting to talk to so many fishermen and see what they were catching. Most did say they were having to go out further and further to get fish now.

We would also talked to firecoalmen, the people who make charcoal, another practice that is causing deforestation of some of Jamaica’s woodlands.
