Skatalites drummer, Lloyd Knibb has passed away around 6:40 yesterday (May 12) in Jamaica from liver cancer. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends, he was a true pioneer in Jamaican music. A creator of the Ska beat his influence on Jamaican music cannot be stressed enough. In the 1960’s he would pound out a beat that would still be heard worldwide 50 years later, that beat was Ska.

Herbie Miller director of the Jamaica Music Museum had this to say, “Knibb was simply the most important and influential modern drummer this country produced,” said . “A master percussionist, he contributed to every style of popular and not so popular musical form…As a drummer he established a rhythmic syntax through bold innovative advances.”

Lloyd Knibb turned 80 years old in April, Jah guide and protect.
