Fishing boats rest on the golden sands of Boston Beach, Portland, Jamaica. (1992)
Just east of Port Antonio is Boston Beach. The beach gets its name from The Boston Fruit Company which was operating in this area in the 1870s. The parish of Portland with its heavy rainfall and fertile soil was once Jamaica’s biggest banana producing regions. That era of “green gold” pretty much ended when in the 1930’s the banana blight swept through the plantations and killed off most of the banana trees.
Boston Beach is also the area where Jamaica’s famous spicy Jerk chicken originates from. If you find yourself in the area it’s worth a stop for an afternoon to watch the surfers and relax on the beach. Grab some ice-cold red Stripes, some Jerk, head to the beach and enjoy !
